U of R's Mega May Tree Giveaway: Strengthening the Inland Empire’s Urban Forest

Credit: communitygreening.org

The University of Redlands Climate Action Corps Fellows, in partnership with Esri, have announced the sixth annual Mega May Tree Giveaway. This community-driven event is designed to bolster the local canopy, mitigate urban heat, and foster environmental stewardship across the Inland Empire.

Event Details

  • When: Saturday, May 9 | 9 a.m. – 12 noon

  • Where: University of Redlands, in front of Memorial Chapel (Drive-through pickup)

  • Who: Open to all Inland Empire residents.

  • Cost: Free (up to two trees in 4-inch pots per household).

Note to Attendees: Supplies are replenished hourly. There is no need to arrive at daybreak; the event is designed for a steady flow of participants throughout the morning.

Commitment to Equity & Environment

In a push for environmental justice, the giveaway includes a specialized tier for high-need areas. Residents providing proof of residence in a CalEnviroScreen score of 60 or higher zone are eligible for larger 5-gallon and 15-gallon trees, ensuring that communities most affected by pollution and heat receive the most robust resources.

Tree Selection & Sourcing

The Climate Action Corps prioritizes "Climate-Ready" species. Selections are vetted by University faculty and the UCANR Master Gardeners, focusing on:

  1. California Native Species

  2. Climate-Ready Inland Empire Varieties

  3. Waterwise & Pollinator-Friendly Habits

Redlands Camera Club Presents: Lake Hodges, Grebes, water levels and the future! by – Brian Caldwell

Having been here for over 100 years, Hodges Reservoir has become an important part of the Pacific Flyway, and with over 240 species of birds residing or passing through is its own micro ecosystem. But there is trouble on the horizon.

As part of the Pacific Flyway, and with over 240 species of birds residing or passing through, Lake Hodges has its own micro ecosystem and is an ideal location for nature photographers. In this presentation, we will discuss the photographic opportunities, along with the best techniques and equipment to get the job done. Brian will highlight the differences between shooting from shore and shooting from a boat, including the pros and cons of each. He will also spend time discussing the various locations on and around the lake, and which areas are best suited for specific photographs.

With Lake Hodges being renowned for its grebes, Brian will explain how to capture that award-winning shot. He will also touch on the challenges grebes are facing due to the state-mandated lower water levels, as well as the individuals who are working to improve the situation.

Presented By Brian Caldwell

Having been a resident of the Del Dios area on the banks of Lake Hodges for more than 30 years, as concessionaire for 10 of those years, currently lead the ‘Kayaking for the Birds’ fishing line removal volunteer group, owns and operates the nature photography tour company, Lake Hodges Photo Tours, Brian is the ultimate lake local. He’s a NANPA (an award-winning photographer) and served as a Grebe consultant for the recent PBS Nature Documentary ‘San Diego, America’s Wildest City’. Brian’s an avid outdoorsman and nature enthusiast. He’s aware of the local climate, seasons, weather, water management, lake level, and how these components affect the flora and fauna in the area. Coupled with his understanding of photography, light, and Grebe behavior, he is THE guide when in pursuit of the shot at Lake Hodges and the surrounding area.

Redlands Police Conducting DUI Checkpoint Friday, Feb. 20

Redlands Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) Checkpoint beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20 through 1 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

The Redlands Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Bonsai cultivation will be topic of horticultural society’s meeting

The Redlands Horticultural and Improvement Society will hold its general meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, at the Church of the Nazarene.

Certified arborist John Nielsen.

John Nielsen, a certified arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture, will present a program titled "Bonsai Tree Cultivation." The presentation will include audience participation.

Nielsen’s interest in bonsai began in 1985. He has studied under masters John Naka, Harry Hirao and Tak Shimazu. For decades, Nielsen has taught classes and private lessons on bonsai techniques throughout Southern California.

Under the direction of Shimazu, Nielsen maintains private collections of specimen trees. He has also exhibited his work at the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino.

"The peace which a graceful garden full of miniature trees provides is priceless," Nielsen said. "After years of caring for trees, you know them well. They become a part of your family."

The meeting will be held at 1307 E. Citrus Ave. Attendees are encouraged to bring tree care questions for a Q&A session following the talk.

Additional information is available at redlandsgardenclub.com or on the society's Facebook page.
