Redlands Area Historical Society and Redlands Camera Club Sponsor Heritage Awards Photo Contest
The Redlands Area Historical Society (RAHS) and the Redlands Camera Club (RCC) have announced a new partnership to co-sponsor the Heritage Awards Photo Contest. This competition celebrates five decades of the city’s prestigious program dedicated to honoring Redlands’ architectural history.
The contest, which is currently open through April 30, 2026, invites residents of all ages—with dedicated categories for both adults and youth—to capture the character of the city’s Heritage Award-winning homes and buildings.
Honoring a Half-Century of History
The timing of the contest marks a significant milestone: the 50th Annual Heritage Awards. Since the program's inception in 1975, more than 400 structures have been honored for their architectural distinction and meticulous maintenance.
“The origination of the Heritage Awards... was driven by a desire to save historic structures from demolition,” said Judith Hunt, President of the Redlands Area Historical Society. “The 1970s were dark years for preservation and so many beautiful Victorian homes fell under the wrecking ball. By acknowledging the significance and history of the iconic architecture in Redlands... we continue to support and advocate for preservation.”
The Judging Panel
A distinguished panel of local leaders will select the winning entries:
Mario Saucedo, Mayor of Redlands
Judith Hunt, President of RAHS
Bruce Herwig, President of the Redlands Camera Club
“When preservation and creativity come together, our entire community benefits,” noted Herwig. “This partnership celebrates Redlands’ past through a shared love of history and photography.”
How to Enter
Winning entries will be announced during the 50th Annual Heritage Awards Presentation on June 9, 2026, at 6:30 PM at the Contemporary Club.
Entry Deadline: April 30, 2026
Eligibility: Open to Adults and Youth
Subject Matter: Any of the 400+ Heritage Award-winning properties in Redlands.

Redlands Camera Club Presents: Lake Hodges, Grebes, water levels and the future! by – Brian Caldwell
Having been here for over 100 years, Hodges Reservoir has become an important part of the Pacific Flyway, and with over 240 species of birds residing or passing through is its own micro ecosystem. But there is trouble on the horizon.
As part of the Pacific Flyway, and with over 240 species of birds residing or passing through, Lake Hodges has its own micro ecosystem and is an ideal location for nature photographers. In this presentation, we will discuss the photographic opportunities, along with the best techniques and equipment to get the job done. Brian will highlight the differences between shooting from shore and shooting from a boat, including the pros and cons of each. He will also spend time discussing the various locations on and around the lake, and which areas are best suited for specific photographs.
With Lake Hodges being renowned for its grebes, Brian will explain how to capture that award-winning shot. He will also touch on the challenges grebes are facing due to the state-mandated lower water levels, as well as the individuals who are working to improve the situation.
Presented By Brian Caldwell
Having been a resident of the Del Dios area on the banks of Lake Hodges for more than 30 years, as concessionaire for 10 of those years, currently lead the ‘Kayaking for the Birds’ fishing line removal volunteer group, owns and operates the nature photography tour company, Lake Hodges Photo Tours, Brian is the ultimate lake local. He’s a NANPA (an award-winning photographer) and served as a Grebe consultant for the recent PBS Nature Documentary ‘San Diego, America’s Wildest City’. Brian’s an avid outdoorsman and nature enthusiast. He’s aware of the local climate, seasons, weather, water management, lake level, and how these components affect the flora and fauna in the area. Coupled with his understanding of photography, light, and Grebe behavior, he is THE guide when in pursuit of the shot at Lake Hodges and the surrounding area.

Redlands Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) Checkpoint beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20 through 1 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location.

There will be aircraft on display for our guests to view. At the conclusion of the event The Salvation Army will pick -up all toys collected in the drive and will donate them to families before the Christmas holiday. We will also be hosting a Historical Aircraft Display. Pilots from local airports are welcome to fly-in, show off their plane and donate a toy. Call for parking instructions on the REI CTAF 123.05.
Last year we had a very successful event. We collected many toys and all that attended had fun and learned about aviation. Here is a link to photos from our 2024 event: 12-7-24 Stuff a Plane Charity Toy Drive Event
In the spirit of giving, we will once again be hosting a LifeStream Blood Drive. Consider donating as there is a severe shortage of blood. You may save a life! The bloodmobile will be onsite between 9am -2pm. Walk-in’s are welcome, but appointments are highly recommended. Please use the QR Code Below to book your appointment.
