Suspect arrested in drive-by incident targeting Jewish family

A 23-year-old Redlands man was arrested Thursday, Jan. 8, in connection with a hate crime that targeted a Jewish family in the 1300 block of Magnolia Avenue in Redlands last month.

The family had just arrived home the evening of Dec. 12 when a vehicle drove past their residence, yelled an antisemitic slur and fired several shots. The family’s home and yard were prominently decorated in celebration of Hanukkah.

No injuries or damage were reported. No shell casings were found, and home surveillance video showed no muzzle flash leading police to believe the weapon was an airsoft handgun.

On Thursday morning, detectives served search warrants in the cities of Redlands and Yucaipa, recovering the airsoft gun used in the incident.

Police arrested Garrett Bailey Stater without incident at his apartment in the 1000 block of Pine Avenue on charges of terrorizing and making terrorist threats.

Two other people were detained and released after questioning.
