Bulldogs Dominate La Sierra in Back-to-Back Shutouts

The University of Redlands softball team (3-1) picked up a pair of run-rule wins Monday afternoon against La Sierra University thanks to an 11-0 game one win and an 8-0 win in game two.

Game 1: Redlands 11 – La Sierra 0

The Bulldogs jumped out in front thanks to a four-run first inning. The first two runs came on junior Jenay Scott’s single up the middle that plated junior Leila Jackson and senior Katlyn Gandara.

Catcher senior Natalie Lowthers then singled home Scott for a 3-0 advantage before fellow senior Maya Holshoe’s double into right center and made it 4-0 Bulldogs after one inning.

Redlands added three more runs in the second thanks to sophomore Avery Provenzano’s double that allowed senior Adyson Kim to score and a Gandara RBI single to left. The third run came courtesy of Scott who doubled home Gandara.

The final four runs came after a pair of two-run innings in the third and fourth. Senior Brooklyn Bard singled to shortstop which allowed senior Avery Duran to take the final 60 feet. Provenzano hit her second double over the center fielder's head to make it 9-0 after three innings of play.

Emi Connell

The freshman catcher hit her first collegiate hit during 11-0 shutout against La Sierra.

Freshman Emi Connell picked up her first collegiate hit and RBI in the fourth on a single to left. She then scored on an error by the catcher for the final of 11-0.

All of Provenzano, Gandara, Jackson, and Scott had two hits. Scott and Provenzano drove in five combined runs. In the circle Gandara went three scoreless innings for her second win of the season. Freshman Caitlynn Griffith finished the final two innings without allowing a hit.

Game 2: Redlands 8 – La Sierra 0

Much like game one when they scored seven runs in the first two innings, Redlands jumped out in front of the Golden Eagles with all eight of their runs coming in the opening two innings.

Gandara and Jackson doubled and tripled to bring home the first two runs. Then Holshoe grounded out, but Jackson was able to make it home safely for a quick 3-0 lead.

In the second, sophomore Saya Fujii bunted for a hit and junior Leila Gomez scored on a throwing error by the player at third. Provenzano hustled around to third on a fly ball that dropped along the left field line which gave Bard and Fujii time to score and make it 6-0.

Gandara and Jackson finished off the scoring with a single to right and a groundout to shortstop for the final of 8-0.

Senior Brianna Garcia went three scoreless for her first win. Junior Emma Swenson pitched the final two innings without allowing a base runner.

Redlands is back at home for a doubleheader with No. 3 Linfield University this Friday with first pitch of game one at 12 p.m. (noon).
