Women's Water Polo uses Dominant Second Quarter to Beat Caltech

The University of Redlands women's water polo team (2-8) outscored the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) 5-1 in the second quarter as they were able to pick up a 9-6 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win Saturday at the Thompson Aquatic Center (TAC).

After three and a half minutes of scoreless action, senior Ainsley Killian found senior Alyssa Sorrell for the opening goal. Following a Beaver goal, freshman Brooklyn Green scored on a powerplay with sophomore Aubree Nabors picking up an assist to head into the second quarter up 2-1.

In the second quarter the Bulldogs started to pull away after Sorrell tallied three goals while Killian and Nabors had the other two. Assists came from freshman Kiera Federline, Killian, Nabors, and junior Natalie Abril to push Redlands ahead by five, 7-2, at the half.

The great second quarter leaked into the third as the defense held Caltech scoreless for almost six minutes and freshman Aubrey Stevenson added her first goal to extend the lead to six, 8-2.

Caltech, though, was the last to score in the third and had three of the first four goals in the fourth to bring them to within three, 9-6, with four minutes still remaining in the fourth quarter.

Following a timeout by coach Tamara Perea, the Bulldogs ended the game holding the Beavers scoreless thanks to a pair of junior keeper Sofia Mather saves.

Sorrell had four goals, a drawn exclusion, and a steal. Nabors had two goals, three assists, and a steal. Federline and junior Lucia Notaro combined for six steals. In goal Abril made four saves and had an assist in the first half while Mather made six saves and recorded a save in the second.

Redlands hosts No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. before hosting Santa Clara University at 3 p.m.
