Bulldogs Rewrite Record Books with 12 New Top-10 Marks in Spokane

The University of Redlands indoor track and field teams recorded 12 new program top 10 times and marks at the Whitworth Indoor Invitational in Spokane, Washington, this weekend.

Men: Eight of the new marks came from the men’s side, led by sophomore Sam James with three. James placed fourth in the heptathlon with 4,311 points, the fourth-highest total in program history.

During the seven-event competition, James won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.77 seconds, moving him into sixth place on the all-time list. He also took fourth in the 1,000 meters with a time of 3:13.04, the fifth-fastest in school history.

Graduate student Nikolas Sorich added three top-10 marks, finishing sixth in the heptathlon with 4,119 points, the seventh-most for a Bulldog. He moved into 10th place in the pole vault by clearing 3.55 meters (11 feet, 7.75 inches) and took sixth in the 1,000 meters in 3:13.86, the new No. 6 time in the record books.

Junior Stian Asper set a program record in the 3,000 meters, finishing seventh in 8:37.21. Senior David Huggins followed in 10th place with a time of 8:38.44, the second-fastest in program history.

In the weight throw, junior Christian Ferguson finished as the runner-up with a mark of 17.29 meters (56 feet, 8.75 inches).

Women: The Bulldogs’ women’s team set four new top-10 marks. Junior Shaylee Heron led the way with two, placing third in the pentathlon with 2,775 points (seventh all-time) and clocking 2:47.48 in the 800 meters (10th all-time).

Sophomore Mari Evonuk and freshman Leilani Mayne also entered the record books in the pentathlon. Evonuk took sixth with 2,597 points (ninth all-time), while Mayne finished ninth with 2,406 points (10th all-time).

Senior Elisabeth Eichinger won the pentathlon with a score of 3,236 points. Her career best of 3,279 points, set last spring, currently ranks third in school history.

Redlands returns to action Friday, Feb. 20, at the Northern Arizona University Tune-Up in Flagstaff, Arizona.
