Police received a report of shots fired with a man down in the apartment Tuesday morning. Officers arrived to find the victim, 36-year-old Aaron Richard Rivera, dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

The suspect fled, leaving the gas burners open on the apartment stove, while the victim’s two juvenile children slept.

Family members and evidence located at the scene indicated the suspect was the victim’s half-brother, Zackary Aaron Brodowski. Surveillance cameras at the apartment complex also showed Brodowski leaving the scene immediately after the shooting in a silver 2008 Ford Focus.

Detectives were able to locate the suspect and the vehicle at his residence in the 900 block of California Street in Calimesa. Detectives and members of the Special Weapons and Tactics team set up surveillance on the residence.

Brodowski was arrested without incident at the scene.

Investigators located a firearm believed to be the murder weapon and clothing matching the clothing worn at the time of the shooting.

Brodowski is being held without bail at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on charges of murder and attempted murder.
