Members of the Jewish community and local residents gathered at Ed Hales Park on Saturday, Dec. 20, to celebrate the seventh night of Hanukkah.
Rabbi Cantor Jennifer Bern-Vogel led the group in traditional prayers and songs, though organizers noted that attendance was lower than in previous years. Among those present were U.S. Rep. Pete Aguilar and his wife, Alisha.
Bern-Vogel thanked the crowd for their presence, noting that community support has been vital for the congregation’s sense of security following a recent tragedy in Sydney.
While Hanukkah is a simple holiday, Bern-Vogel said it remains a special tradition that children and families look forward to annually.
"It’s significant because it really symbolizes light and hope and resilience, and shows that we are not afraid to be who we are," Bern-Vogel said. "Even in the darkest times, we have to be a light."
The event saw a heightened police presence provided by the Multiple Enforcement Team. The extra precautions followed a Dec. 12 drive-by shooting at a local Jewish family’s home, which had been decorated for the holiday.
